Cast on 40 stitches holding both yarns together, 10 stitches per needle. Knit stockinette in the round until the piece measures 9 cm.
Thumb Gusset
Start the thumb gusset increases at the beginning of the first needle.
Tip: Add 2 stitch markers to indicate the increase spots. Place a marker after the 2nd and 4th stitches, counting from the beginning of the round. Increases always take place in the same spot, after the first marker and before the second marker.
Knit 2 sts (marker), M1R, knit 2* sts, M1L, (marker), knit the remaining Sts on the needle. Complete the round as usual.
*The number of sts between the increases, increases by two stitches each time.
Repeat the increases a total of 5 times every other round. In total, 10 sts are added to the work, and after the increases, there are 12 stitches between the markers. After the last increase round, knit 1 round without increases.
On the next round, place the 12 stitches for the thumb between the markers on a spare yarn to wait. Cast on 2 stitches in their place, so you have 10 stitches per needle again.
Continue knitting stockinette in the round until the entire piece measures 18 cm OR your preferred length. For example, knit until the piece reaches the second joint of your pinkie finger.
Bind off all stitches.
Thumb
Divide the sts to two needles (6 sts per needle) and pick up 4 additional sts from the edge onto a third needle.
Knit stockinette in the round with 12 sts until the piece is 3 cm long, measured from the 4 picked-up Sts or until the piece reaches the bottom of your thumb's nail.
Bind off all stitches.
Knit the second piece similarly.
Finish the fingerless mittens by wet blocking or steaming.
